The Shadow Thieves by Anne Ursu April 11, 2010

The Shadow Thieves is a decent book, and very descriptive. Maybe too descriptive. Anne Ursu took a paragraph to describe what kind of drink a character was drinking. Beside that, this book has a good story line and I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Greek myths. Never read a book with Greek myths? Now would be a good time to try.

Charlotte Meilswetski is no extraordinary kid. She can’t make it onto the school gymnastics team, and can’t get into the school play. Half of the girls had brown hair before summer break and came back to school as blondes. Things start to look up when Charlotte finds a stray kitten. When no one claims it, she names it Bartholomew, Mew for short. A few weeks later, her cousin Zee comes to live with her. Charlotte starts to feel even more left out at school because Zee has a British accent. Soon, Charlottes freind Maddie becomes sick. She is weak and can’t stand up. Maddie can’t even get out of her bed and is showing no signs of recovery. They don’t even know what sickness it is. Soon, almost everyone at school becomes sick. Eventually, The school closes for awhile from lack of students. Zee admits to Charlotte that he thinks that it is his fault. He says that the same exact thing happened in his hometown in England. One by one the kids had gotten sick, but it was only the kids around him. Zee says that he even saw how the kids were becoming sick. Skeleton like men were attacking kids and, strange enough, taking their shadows. Charlotte doesn’t completely believe him untill two skeleton like men attack Charlotte. She and Zee escape, and their weird Englich teacher Mr. Metos explains to them what is happening. Greek myths turn out to be real, and an immortal man named Philonecron wants to rule the underworld. He wants to throw the dead in Tartarus, which is where the worst criminals go when they die. First, Philonecron needs an army. He decides to use shadows of mortal children. When a shadow is destroyed, the owner dies. What does this hace to do with Charlotte and Zee? Philonecron wants Zee to help him and rule beside him in the underworld. He was using Zee’s blood track him and take the shadows of the children around him. Mr. Metos is a descendant of Prometheus (the creatore of humans) and is vowed to help humanity, so he goes into the underworld to try to stop Philonecron and promises Zee and Charlotte that he will be back soon. Mr. Metos doesn’t come back, and Charlotte and Zee recieve a note asking them to go to the underworld and help Mr. Metos. Can they save humanity? Read the book and find out!

This book is pretty good, and you should try it out. Try to read the first couple of chapters, and see if you like it. The Shadow Thieves is recommended to people who like The Lightning Thief.

My Sisters Keeper by Jodi Picoult March 27, 2010

My Sisters Keeper  is one of the best books I have ever read. It is on the top ten list. This may be a good book, but it is sad. I almost cried (but cried during the movie). (Speaking of the movie, the book is better, as always) Shocking, and interesting, you have to read My Sisters Keeper!!

Kate Fitszgerald was diagnosed with leukemia at age two. Her brother Jesse wasn’t a genetic match and could not be a donor. Their parents decide to have another baby, and with todays technology, they could make sure that this baby would be a match. They named her Andromeda. Anna for short. Unexpectedly, Kate is still alive at the age of sixteen. Anna, at age thirteen, has been a donor for her sister all of her life. The doctors want to take one of Anna’s kidneys and put it in Kate, but  Anna says she is tired of being a donor and doesn’t want to do it anymore. Her parents want her to give Kate the kidney, but Anna sues her parents for rights to her own body. She hires a lawyer named Alexander Cambell. During the case, he finds his high school sweetheart, and tries to be with her again. Jesse is dyslexic, an alcholic, and blows buildings up and sets empty places on fire for entertainment all because his parents were only concerned for Kate. All of this drama put together makes a fantastic book.

I will warn you now, the ending is not what you expect, and this book is hard to put down. My Sister’s Keeper switches narators, so you can see the story from each angle. Start reading! (My Sister’s Keeper is written by Jodi Picoult)

New Moon, book two in the Twilight Saga, is an excellent sequel to Twilight. Written by Stephenie Meyer, it is still full of suspense, romance, and action. The book is intended for young adults and teens. In New Moon, Isabella Swan becomes heart broken when Edward Cullen, her one and only love, leaves her. She goes into a deep depression that is overwhelming and only her friend Jacob can pull her out. Full of wild twists and turns, this is a book that you can’t put down.
